A Shared Love

Kenneth Good’s passion for plants, trees and flowers bloomed at a young age. Born in Peru, Nebraska, he grew to love the landscape there, and spent much of his time as a young boy outdoors, amongst the hills, woods and rivers near his home. Later he moved to Lincoln, graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and went on to work for more than 30 years as a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.

Ken’s love of the land didn’t end with the workday. His greatest pleasure was puttering alongside his Basenji dogs in his backyard garden, which brimmed with peonies, daylilies and iris. In his retirement years he was an active member of the Lincoln Garden Club and often opened his own garden for tours.

A budding philanthropist
Ken met weekly for coffee with his friends from the Soil Conservation Service, and the group was known to tease their friend occasionally for his frugal ways. What they didn ’t know, though, was that Ken was actually a generous philanthropist who had planned his will carefully to benefit several causes close to his heart.

When Ken Good died in 2008 at the age of 92, his estate bequeathed gifts to his church, the Lincoln Garden Club, the Masonic Home of which he’d been a member since 1947, the UNL Garden Friends and NET Television and NET Radio.

“Ken Good was a faithful friend of NET for many years, and we are so honored that he remembered us in his estate plans,” says Michele Peon-Casanova, director of major and planned giving at NET. “His gift is truly the seed that will blossom into countless hours of educational programs for all Nebraskans.
